This band was recorded in a set up called 'the heptagon suites' at Ex'pression. The heptagon suites are 5 independent and synchronized control rooms wrapped around a large acoustic studio and 3 isolation booths. There is also a control room that syncs the rooms up for multiple recordings on a Control 24 console. For the recording I was in the control room throughout a good portion of recording. It was my job to make sure the band mates could hear themselves and that everyone in the other rooms were online before I could start recording. For the mixing of the song I used a another Irish song as a reference.

The recording was a little too drum heavy for Irish music based on my experience, so I brought them down into the background so that there could still be a beat and not overpower the other instruments. A few times in the recording the bass would clip from the player plucking her string, so I searched out those areas and pops. The hardest part was making the mandolin sound like a mandolin and not like it was a second violin. In order to do that, there was a lot of equalization being done. A high pass and low pass filter had to be put on and the high ends boosted, while the low ends were cut.

This band consisted of a piano player and a drummer. They were recorded using the SSL 9000. The piano was recorded in a large room, that reflected a good amount of reverb, and the drums were recorded in an ISO (Isolation) booth.

John Morgan, the pianist, liked reverb a lot. So I placed reverb plug-ins on the mics we had placed for the piano room and keys. And to make the drummer sound like he was recorded in the same room, I placed a plate reverb plug-in on his snare and the same reverb plug-in I used with the pianist on the mics used as overheads for the drum kit.
